Industry Sectors and the Economic Cycle

Different industry sectors perform differently at different points in the economic cycle, setting up the included companies as either buying or selling opportunities for share traders. As a general rule:

  • Growth stocks tend to perform better when the economy is expanding, as businesses spend to upgrade their equipment and technology. These stocks are characterised by high growth rates and premium valuations in comparison to the overall market.

Thinking through a trading plan

It’s become a cliché to say that those who trade without a plan are planning to fail. Unfortunately, there’s no better way of phrasing that simple truth (which of course is why it’s become a cliché). Without a framework for one’s trading, there’s no business plan. Success becomes an accident, if it happens at all, rather than something that’s organised and therefore repeatable.

Trading ranges versus trading trends

Every trader loves a trend. They’re easy to spot and easy to trade. Open positions require little management, as the movement is consistent and the expected retracements generally don’t comprise more than 5% to 10% of the stock’s price. Best of all, profits tend to be highest in trend trading, with significant gains possible in a relatively brief span of time.
